Despite the fact, that various literary organizations in Armenia were founded straightway after the Soviet power came, Writers' Union of Armenia was founded in 1934, August, simultaneously with USSR Writers' Union and as a composite part of the last. The Constituent Assembly was held during 1-5 of August, after which Armenian delegation of writers took part in USSR Writers' Union Constituent Assembly. In September of 1939 in Armenia the millenial annivesary of 'Sasuntsi Davit' epos was celebrated. On this occasion USSR Writers' Union directorate plenary session was held in Armenia. In 1941, from 10-th till 20-th of May Armenian Literature Decade was organized in Moscow.
More than fifty Armenian writers have fought in Great Patriotic War. In 1946 the second Assembly was held, the resolution of which was Avetik Isahakyan to be the president of Writers' Union of Armenia. The third Assembly was held in 1954, July, and Avetik Isahakyan was re-elected. As a result of the fourth(1959, January), the fifth(1966, November) and the sixth(1971, January) Assemblies Edgar Topchyan was elected to be the Secretary-in-Charge of the Union. The seventh(1976, April) Assembly of Writers' Union elected Vardges Petrosyan to be the Secretary-in-Charge. As a result of the eighth(1981, May) and the ninth(1986, May) Assemblies he became the president of the Union. In 1988 a special session was held after which Hrachya Hovhannisyan was elected to be the president.
In 1990, June 15, the directorate of Writers' Union publicates the self-dependent organization's project. In the September of the same year Writers' Union Home was rendered to special army detachment as a general headquarters. Armenian writers took active part in reconstruction of Armenian National State system and in Liberation War of Artsakh. Several writers fought in different battles. One of them, Samvel Shahmuradyan, fell in batlle of Gandzasar.
Vazgen Sargsyan became the Defence minister and then the prime-minister of Armenia. In 1990, September and in 1991, February was held the WUA tenth Assembly in two phases. The president was elected to be Vahagn Davtyan. In 1994, January, the special session elected Razmik Davoyan to be the president. Another special session in 1996 elected Hrant Matevosyan to lead the Union.
In 2001 the thirteenth Assembly was held and the WUA president was elected to be Levon Ananyan. In 2002, June, Writers' Union of Armenia organized the first Pan-Armenian Congress and in 2004, June, was held the second one. In 2002 was founded the WUA publishing house, young writers' book series called 'Mutk' started its publication. Alongside with existing literary magazines and newspapers('Grakan Tert', 'Nork', 'Nor dar', 'Literaturnaya Armenia') 'Artasahmanyan Grakanutyun' magazine, 'Satirikon' humourous newspaper, 'Tsolker' and 'Lusapsak' young people's magazines are being published.
In 2004, June, the seventy-year Anniversary of Writers' Union of Armenia was celebrated.
